Cybersecurity: Protect Your Episcopal Institution

You may be at risk.

Cyberattacks are on the rise—and it may surprise you that churches, schools, camps, and nonprofit organizations are highly vulnerable to data breaches, ransomware attacks, and other cyber threats. The sensitive data handled by these institutions, combined with limited cybersecurity measures, can make them easy targets for cybercriminals.

Cybersecurity statistics indicate that there are more than 2,300 cyberattacks per day. Since 2001, the victim count has increased from six victims per hour to 97 victims per hour, a whopping 1,517% increase over 20 years.*

While the high risk of cybercrime has led the global insurance industry to severely limit and/or exclude coverage, with Church Insurance the first $250,000 of loss due to cybersecurity breaches (system attacks) and the first $25,000 due to cybercrime (activities such as scams, theft, and fraud) is automatically included in a client’s base coverage. However, many breaches and crimes can cost institutions far more. For the 2025 calendar year, if an institution pays an additional $700 annually, Church Insurance will raise those limits to $1 million and $100,000 respectively, which can make a tremendous difference.

“Based on the types and number of claims that we are seeing,” Senior Vice President Steve Follos says, “I’d like to see more churches take advantage of this incredible value.”

While having the proper coverage is crucial, prevention is key.

Beyond the high financial cost, a cyberattack can disrupt operations, compromise sensitive data, and create lasting damage to one’s reputation. To address these cyber risks, prevention is key. Consider developing a robust cybersecurity policy and train all volunteers, lay employees, and clergy on cybersecurity best practices.
